DIY: Beating Starbucks

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

Well actually it’s not a little secret. It’s the biggest thing that keeps me loving the fit foodie life.

As teens, how can we resist those hot, foamy, creamy Starbucks drinks?

Well actually I’m a loyal Peet’s fan, but we can pretend they’re the same for today.

Ok. Point is, I love me some caffeine and I love it a latte. See what I did there? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here we go. Coffee’s great and all, but nothing beats matcha green tea. It’s basically super-green tea that’s grown a certain way so that it has tens upon hundreds of more antioxidants and other health benefit gibberish. They then grind it up into a powder, and then you can use it to make godly green lattes. To be honest, the whole health thing is great, but it just tastes. amazing. End of story.

Also, the coolest part is, it actually tastes best with almond milk rather than normal milk (which has naturally occurring hormones and stuff that can mess with teen health a bit). Woah. Plot twist much? My inner foodie could go on and on telling you about how the delicate almond flavor complements the bright matcha and the two meld into an earthy yet floral concoction but my very prevalent outer teen will just tell you it’s really niceeeee.

Feel the Matcha Pow(d)er

Ingredients:

-1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or really your liquid of preference)

-1 tsp matcha green tea powder

Directions:

Either using the stove top or the microwave, heat a few spoonfuls of of the milk to around boiling point. Stir in the matcha, and keep mixing it to break up the chunks of powder and stir until it’s blended thoroughly. Slowly stir in the rest of the milk, and heat it up to your preferred temperature!

Enjoy the heck out of it, and watch yourself get hooked. I’ve basically had it every single day for the past two years, and to be honest, I can already see me in my dying minutes croaking, “My matcha! My matcha…” Beep. Beep. And I’ll be done. Attention: I would like to be buried with my matcha close to my heart. My eternal thanks.

On a lighter note, it’s MATCHA TIME so I will be off shortly! Mornings are only worth waking up to when you know matcha is waiting for you. Don’t take my word for it, try it ๐Ÿ˜‰ Wanna know how to be a morning person? Matcha. Wanna know how to motivate yourself to exercise (in the morning too woah)? Matcha. Wanna know how to be a boss at life? Matcha. Wanna dominate the world? Matcha. Wanna know the key to my heart? Matcha.

Alrighty, I’m out of matcha preaching, but you know where to find me if you want a nice long riveting sermon about it… Or a lovely chant lullaby to fall asleep to… Whichever appeals to you.

Here’s the almond milk I love, it’s Trader Joe’s unsweetened vanilla almond “beverage”. It actually can foam up, and it’s the most creamy and real-milk-like, but you can always experiment with some other kinds. But yes. If you can, it is more than worth the trek to Trader Joe’s. And yes. I may or may not have six almond milks from TJ’s stacked in my fridge right now.
